About
About our Spirituality
International organisation aimed at helping the poor and marginalised according to the teachings of Jesus.
We welcome ALL PEOPLE and make you feel at home while playing your part for the good of others.
The different communities, spread throughout the world, share the same spirituality and principles which characterise the way of Sant’Egidio:
Prayer: Is an essential part of the life of the community throughout the world. Prayer is central to the overall direction of community life.
Communicating the Gospel: The heart of the life of the Community, which extends to all those who seek and ask for a meaning for their life.
Solidarity with the poor: Lived voluntarily as a free service, in the evangelical spirit of a Church that is the “Church for all and particularly the poor” (Pope John XXIII)
Ecumenism: Lived as a friendship, prayer and search for unity among Christians of the whole world.
Dialogue: Recommended by Vatican II as a way of peace and co-operation among the religions, and also a way of life and as a means of resolving conflicts.
The Community of Sant’Egidio
A “Church public lay association”. It began in Rome in 1968, in the period following the Second Vatican Council at the initiative of a young man, who was then less than twenty, Andrea Riccardi. Today it is a movement of lay people from across all religions and has more than 60,000 members, dedicated to charity and evangelisation, in Rome, Italy and in more than 73 countries throughout the world. The Community has as its center the Roman Church of Sant’Egidio, from which the Community takes its name. Perhaps the community is well-recognised as mediator of peace negotiations, with the success of the peace in Mozambique as the greatest triumph.
In Johannesburg, the community is currently based in Braamfontein, Yeoville and Soweto. It has plunged into:
The School of Peace: The Schools of Peace offers a family-like environment to support children and adolescents in their scholastic efforts. Members of the community are friends to the children but also help families and propose an educational model open to people of all kinds, promoting solidarity with the less fortunate and enabling children to overcome social barriers and discrimination.
The Soup Kitchen: Solidarity with the poor is lived as a close and friendly presence to restore the dignity of each person with simple gestures of respect and friendship. We know each of our friends on the streets by name; we listen to their stories and serve them a meal and a cup of worm tea or soup. This helps us to understand the complex and uneven world made up of people of very different ages, paths and situations. Contrary to popular belief, living on the street is almost never by choice.
Prayer: “Lord, teach us how to pray.” Prayer is the heart of the life of the community. In praying together, beside the mystery of being children of God, there is also the mystery of brotherhood. The Gospels we read together teach us how to respond to the challenges we face and the challenges faced by those we serve.

Christmas Lunch
The Christmas Lunch with the homeless and our children of the School of Peace is a tradition of the Community of Sant’Egidio since 1982 when a small group of poor people was welcomed by the Community at the banquet table in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere.
The Community is a family gathered by the Gospel. Therefore at Christmas, when all over the world families gather around the table, the Community celebrates with the poor, who are our friends and our relatives.
